Buy my newspaper, please

Oh, no – we’ve been away for a week and we’re behind!

The News & Observer is drafting employees company-wide to sell subscriptions in a contest that began October 1 and runs through November 23. Employees can earn a 50 percent commission on each sale and if employees sell at least 200 subscriptions in all, the company will give away three gift cards in a drawing that “all participants” will be eligible for. Commissions are to be paid December 11, “just in time for the holidays.”

The memo to N&O employees from Jim Puryear, VP for circulation, doesn’t define “participant” – such as whether trying but failing to sell a subscription makes you a participant in the contest. It doesn’t say what the gift cards will be worth, either.

But, if you know an N&O employee and want the paper, now’s the time to hit them up: you can get a daily and Sunday order for one year through them for $100 instead of the regular price of $195. They get $50.

Puryear says that in the week between announcing the contest and his September 30 memo, “I’ve already heard from several of you that have orders lined up.”

(The author of this blog, btw, is no longer an N&O employee. I can’t help you with the discount.)
