Associated Press layoffs cross the country

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Update: The Newspaper Guild, a part of the Communications Workers of America, lists one Raleigh-based employee among its members laid off by the AP.

Update: From Editor & Publisher Friday morning: “The count of Associated Press union employees laid off this week has risen to 90, which, according to the news cooperative, meets its goal of cutting annual payroll costs by 10 percent. It is the AP’s largest cut in newsroom layoffs in memory, roughly 2 percent of its workforce.”

Update: From the News Media Guild Web site Wednesday — “The Associated Press informed the Guild late Tuesday evening that 57 employees received termination notices earlier in the day. The list includes 33 newspersons, 19 editorial assistants, and five photographers.”

If we covered everyone in the news media making job cuts, that could be a whole other blog. But the Associated Press’ commitment to “lower its payroll costs by 10 percent by the end of 2009″ has a wide reach, with the cuts beginning Tuesday.

The Gawker is compiling a list of casualties. “From a tipster: They hear that ‘a high percentage’ of the editorial assistants nationwide are being let go, as well as a National Photo Editor. In all, they hear, the layoffs will total 80-90 people,” the blog says.

Anyone in the Raleigh AP bureau want to drop us a line?

“The AP, a nonprofit corporation controlled by United States newspapers, said it had about 4,000 employees worldwide a year ago,” according to The New York Times. “It reported labor expenses of $418.8 million in 2008, or 58 percent of total operating costs.”

McClatchy going mobile with AP

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

McClatchy newspapers will contribute to AP Mobile, a multimedia news portal developed by the Associated Press that provides 24-hour access to international, national and local news.

AP Mobile offers applications for Blackberry, iPhone, Nokia devices and Android Market, and promises one soon for Palm Pre.

“Mobile is a key component of McClatchy’s overall digital strategy,” Christian Hendricks, McClatchy’s vice president, interactive media, said in a statement, according to Editor & Publisher.

In addition to AP’s own news, sports and entertainment, more than 1,000 AP members and other sources provide content for AP Mobile.

McClatchy’s Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee  joined AP Mobile in 2008, and its El Nuevo Herald of Miami was the first Spanish-language daily to contribute to the U.S.-Spanish section of the mobile service.

AP refiguring how it shares

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

The Associated Press is considering withholding some of its material from members’ Web sites, instead allowing members to link to it on a central AP site, says an AP memo obtained by Neiman Journalism Lab. The idea fundamentally changes the consortium’s 150-year-old operating principle of sharing content among the membership.

The plan separates news stories into two categories: “utility” content, or stories other organizations are covering, such as a natural disaster, and “unique” content that only AP has.

“The AP would essentially be relying on its vast network of members to provide search engine optimization for its most unique content,” Zachary M. Seward says in the first of a promised series based on the memo.

He quotes Srinandan Kasi, the AP’s general counsel: “(There is) the ability now to be able to make a decision that says, this is not something we want to generically put on the wire and send to everyone to publish everywhere. We instead think this would be useful for people to use as supplemental, to enrich their storytelling. But it’s available for them [newspapers' Web sites ] to be able to point to. And the reason to do that is, then you have a bunch of links that point to a particular piece of content. You have better search outcomes. You have better exploitation of the link value, if you will, to that piece of content. So there’s an ability to think of that piece of content differently because you’re trying to maximize traffic as compared to other content where the benefit is really about getting the initial engagement.”
